I did my first “race” last night at Portland International Raceway. The course was seven 2-mile laps around the track. As part of the “novice women’s” group, seven of us took turns drafting, pulling, and getting dropped (in my case) for about 45 minutes (18mph average). I made the rookie mistake of, as Bill puts it, thinking I “owed” something to the other women and pulling them on the straightaways into the wind. I won’t make that mistake again. My screaming calves won’t let me.
Bill and Kevin also raced--as part of the novice men’s group. Because they had such a large group, they managed to save a bit more energy than I did. Maybe I’ll ride with the men next time …
All in all, it was a lot of fun. I’ll definitely be there again. Thanks, Doug, for shaming me into going. ; )
